Parrots and magic [Jan. 27th, 2017|01:05 pm]
Marissa Lingen

Your vocabulary word for the day is psittaculture: the care and raising of parrots and parrot-related species.

This is relevant because my short story The Psittaculturist’s Lesson is now live at Daily Science Fiction. Go, read, enjoy!

I don't think that word is properly formed, actually. The Greek root is psittakos, which came into Latin as psittacus (so both roots are Latin, which is one possible objection out of the way); but the combining form is psittaco-, not psitta-. Admittedly that's a bit clunkier to pronounce, but purely as "vocabulary" I'd rather have the authentic classical forms.
